There are many hormonal and musculoskeletal changes that occur during pregnancy.  It is believed that hormones cause change at the insertion point of ligaments to the bone.  A higher concentration of ligaments in the lower spine may suggest the cause for a higher incidence of back pain in pregnancy because of more exposure to hormonal influences.  Weight gain experienced during pregnancy may result in postural changes that produce low back pain or middle back pain.

Due to the shifting of the center of gravity of the trunk and abdomen, women may unconsciously shift their head and upper body backwards over their pelvis, inducing excessive backward bending of the lumbar spine.  The belief is that this shift in load distribution generates stress on intervertebral discs, facet joints, and ligaments, promoting joint inflammation.  This inflammation causes a lot of the pregnancy back pain that is often felt.

Low back pain during pregnancy can present with a variety of symptoms.  Between 45.5% and 65% of women report radiation of pain into the buttocks, and as many as half report experiencing low back pain with radiation down one leg.  Standing, sitting, lying, coughing, sneezing, straining during bowel movements, and walking can be either relieving or aggravating factors.

Pregnancy, for good reason, is considered by many a fragile time of a woman’s life.  Health care providers use special precautionary measures to ensure the health of the growing fetus and the mother.  For this reason, they are often hesitant to address the symptoms of low back pain, which are widespread and often debilitating.  If unaddressed, these symptoms can persist during pregnancy and affect the lifestyle and well-being of the patient postpartum.  The trusted team at A.I.M. Physical Therapy will work to relieve pain while maintaining the health and safety of both mother and baby.  Our gentle hands on approach and exercises are customized to adjust to the your changing condition.
