Mechanical Back Pain

When we examine your back pain, it is much like detective work.  You may be experiencing pain either in the back or down the legs.  Once the cause of the back pain is found with a thorough evaluation, it is much easier to customize a treatment plan around your problem to achieve the results you want.

Studies point to mechanical low back pain as the second most common symptom physicians see in their offices.  According to Dr. Everett C. Mills, MD., medical director of Penn State Hershey Medical center, studies show that 85% of the US population will suffer an episode of mechanical low back pain in their lifetime.  Causes of mechanical LBP generally are attributed to an acute traumatic event, but they may also include chronic problems. The severity of an acute traumatic event varies widely, from twisting one's back to being involved in a motor vehicle collision. Mechanical LBP due to chronic trauma tends to occur more commonly in the workplace or as we age.  Multiple times of bending, stooping, lifting, and sitting can wear and tear on the joints in your spine.

The movements of your spine consist of the combined motions of the vertebrae, with 80-90% of the lumbar movement occurs at the L4-L5 and L5-S1 levels. The lumbar spine position most at risk for producing low back injuries is bent forward with twisting, and attempting to lift a heavy object with out-stretched hands.

Physical Therapy is recommended for patients with mechanical low back pain. Dr. Mills recommends that a regiment of physical therapy specific to treating mechanical back pain conditions.  Studies found that patients who received manual physical therapy for first pain control and then strengthening, had much better outcomes.
