From The PT’s Desk

Neil Trickett, PT
CEO

“Before physical therapy my back bothered me at times. I would stop what I was doing to sit down and rest. Now my back is much improved. I don’t have the pain as much. I enjoy the exercises and they have helped immensely. I would recommend A.I.M. Physical Therapy to everyone with back problems.”    --L.J.

Herniated Discs

A herniated disc can be incredibly painful and can cause a great deal of limitations on the body’s movement, thus hindering a person’s mobility and overall ability to perform day-to-day tasks.  Measures that may help your patients prevent low back pain or a herniated disc include:

  1. Exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy body weight.  This may reduce the load on their lower back.

  2. Quitting smoking.  Nicotine can harm the discs in their back because it lowers the ability of the discs to absorb the nutrients they need to stay healthy and it may cause them to become dry and brittle.

  3. Practicing good posture.  To reduce the stress that improper posture puts on the back the therapists at AIM Physical Therapy will teach your patients how to use good posture while standing or walking, keeping their shoulders back and down, chin back, abdomen in, and lower back supported.

  4. Using proper lifting techniques, such as lifting by squatting and bending their knees, and using their legs to push themselves up.

Ultimately, treatment depends on the severity of the injury, how much it is affecting your patient’s ability to function normally, the imposition on their lifestyle, and the amount of pain that it is inflicting.  Tight back muscles need to be stretched and weak back muscles need to be strengthened.  Patients with a herniated disc are commonly prescribed physical therapy.  A well-rounded rehabilitation program assists in reducing pain and inflammation, improving mobility and strength, and helping patients do their daily activities with greater ease and ability.

Special extension exercises can help relieve pain from a herniated disc.  Exercise can work like a vacuum to suck the center of the disc back into place, helping release pressure on the nerve.  Our team can also alleviate pressure on the disc by making sure the smaller muscles of the spine are coordinated and strong.
